The Difference Between Caretakers & Stewards

Board Members Shouldn’t Be Club Caretakers

Stewardship is often used in private club governance. However, it is rarely defined.

Boards are filled with talented, accomplished people who genuinely care about their clubs. These exceptional people accept their seats with a genuine sense of responsibility. The question worth asking: responsible for what, exactly?

When stewardship is defined as preserving what exists, it sets a standard for decision-making.

“Tradition” is treated as a strategy. The loudest voices, the ones most emotionally attached to how things have always been done, will carry disproportionate weight. The club will slowly drift toward irrelevance while believing it is being led into the future. Change will feel like a threat.

A preservation-focused board takes a caretaker role. They keep the club from dying today. Reacting to challenges. This role is important, but should be trusted to management teams and staff leadership.

When stewardship is defined as building what’s needed to thrive, every conversation shifts.

A board member then asks a different question. Not “will a long tenured member be upset if we change this?” but instead “what does this club need to be for the next generation of members who haven’t joined yet?”

Clubs that endure across generations are led by people who understand their obligation is to the future of the institution, not the comfort of the present.

Being a true steward for your club is not easy.

Stewardship requires making decisions that some current members will resist, communicating with transparency about why, and trusting that the long-term health of this community is worth the short-term friction.

More than the protection of what was, stewardship is the cultivation of what’s next.

Are you here to hold the line, or to move it forward?

Your answer will determine if your members thirty years from now will have pride in belonging.
